Closing Argument from Steve Soyka

Hello Stearns County Residents.

My name is Steve Soyka and I am running to be your next Stearns County Sheriff. I have 27 years of law enforcement experience with all of it being in a Sheriff Office. This means that I understand how a Sheriff’s Office operates and the internal workings of the agency. I understand the numerous aspects of a Sheriff’s Office that are constantly in motion to include Patrol, Jail, Dispatch, Court Security, Medical Examiner, Civil Process and more. My work experience coupled with my education which includes a degree in Criminal Justice, my completion of and certification by the State of Minnesota BCA Supervision and Management and Senior Supervision and Management classes, SWAT team leader and Command School, and completion of Multi-Jurisdictional Task Force Management more than qualifies me for the position of Sheriff and gives me numerous different life experiences, training and education opportunities to call upon when leading the Sheriff’s Office.

I have listened to my opponent talk. It is apparent that he is concerned with technology and software for the Sheriff Office and says little about serving the public. Technology and software will always be present to better serve you but I feel deeply that communication and interaction with the public should come first. We solved crimes long ago with old fashioned investigative work and talking. This still holds true to this day. As Sheriff I will always be striving to use the latest in technology, science, and training to solve crimes and better our service to you. My opponent talks of Sex Trafficking however seems to neglect all the other problems in our area, such as drugs, gangs, and gun violence among many things. It is important to be able to look at the overall picture. As Sheriff I will do that. Sex trafficking is a problem in our area and I have seen it at the victims level and not from an office. I think this street level experience is important when dealing with this or other problems. As Sheriff I will apply what I have learned to combat these problems.

As your Sheriff, I intend to bring about a change in philosophy and mind-set in having the Sheriff’s Office be more community oriented. I intend to put YOU, the public as a priority, and to deliver the best services that we can. I hope to be more interactive with the community in many formats and to encourage the Sheriff’s Office to do so and to bring forth a team work atmosphere within the agency. I ask that when you cast your ballot on November 6th that you consider me to be your next Sheriff of Stearns County.
