Yesterday I had the privilege to be involved with a great organization and partake in the Special Olympics Torch Run. The Special Olympics and Law Enforcement have teamed up for years in both the Torch Run and the Polar Plunge to make the Olympics a good event for the special Olympians. The torch run has not been in Central MN for about 12 years or so and through the hard work of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 17, the President of the lodge and I organized the event to come back to our area.
The torch (similar to the Olympic Torch) was brought to our area by law enforcement, EMS and fire officials of Morrison County with the Morrison County Sheriff himself leading the way!! After the torch was handed to our Central Minnesota group we delivered it all the way to St. Cloud along Highway 10 and through St. Cloud giving it off to Sherburne County Sheriff officials as it continues its trek to the Twin Cities and the Special Olympic Games!
Special thanks to all those involved including past and current members of the Stearns County Sheriffs Office, the Belgrade, Rice, and Sauk Rapids Police Departments and the volunteers for actually running, biking or rollerblading the torch. A thanks to all agencies who provided traffic escort for the event also. A Big shout out to the special Olympians, Shelby and Sarah, who completed the last mile with us. They never gave up! Overall the event was a success and we have every intention of brining it back next year. This is another good example of law enforcement and the community coming together and as your next Sheriff I will support and assist in these events in any way I can.
